Does Home Insurance Cover Earthquake or Flood?
A standard home insurance policy does not cover loss or damage due to earthquake or flood. See the list of perils covered by home insurance.
Insurance policies normally distinguish between water damage from leaking pipes or sprinker systems in your home (which may be covered by your policy) and damage caused by underground water and weather events. You should review your policy document to determine your coverage.
Earthquake Insurance
Earthquake insurance is normally available from most insurance companies as an endorsement to your home insurance policy.
Flood Insurance
Flood insurance is available from some insurance companies, and you may even qualify for federal flood insurance. The National Flood Insurance Program has more information about flood insurance.
