Homeowners Insurance

Homeowners insurance is a core component of sound financial planning. Your home is probably the single largest asset you own; therefore it is imperative that you protect your investment with homeowners insurance.

Homeowners Insurance Coverage

The coverages provided by a standard homeowners insurance policy are detailed below:

  • Coverage for the Structure of Your House

The primary coverage provided by a homeowners insurance policy is for the physical structure of your home (excluding your land). You need sufficient insurance to pay for the cost of rebuilding your house if it is damaged or destroyed.

  • Coverage for Detached Structures

In addition to your house, you may have other freestanding structures on your property, such as a garage, shed, or pool house. Most policies provide coverage for detached structures up to 10 percent of the value of your house.

  • Coverage for Your Personal Property

Your personal property, or the "content" in your home, includes your furniture, appliances, and other possessions (excluding vehicles). Most homeowners policies provide personal property coverage up to 50-70 percent of the value of your house. This level of coverage is normally more than adequate for most people. It is recommended that you prepare an inventory of your personal property and estimate the total value to ensure you have an appropriate level of protection.

Check that your policy also includes off-premise coverage, so that your personal items are covered even if they are not on your property when loss or damage occurs.

Standard coverage for high-value items such as jewelry, furs, and silverware is often limited (coverage can vary by state); however increased protection is generally available as a policy endorsement.

  • Liability Coverage

Liability coverage is important because it protects you against lawsuits arising from injuries or property damage. It pays for the cost of your defense in court, and any awards, settlements, or compensation in favor of the injured party, up to your policy limits. No-fault medical coverage is also included for when someone is injured in your home.

  • Coverage for Additional Living Expenses and Loss of Use

If you cannot live in your home due to damage caused by a covered peril, your may receive compensation for excess living expenses incurred, such as hotel and restaurant bills, and loss of rental income.

  • Additional Coverages

Additional coverage may be provided for other costs incurred, such as damage to trees and shrubs (other than by wind and ice), clean up and removal of debris, and fire department charges.
